If You Want Me

Wed Oct 8, 2008, 9:00 AM
I've started to think that journal subjects are pretty much the same. Usually an update of sorts or whatever, with a few hints of personal life involved perhaps. I guess I'm foolishly stating the obvious but I don't know, I guess I'm not too good with starting things off.

But anyway, onto the update of sorts...

Because I'm now taking Photography AS and have been for I believe four and a half weeks, I think it's fitting to talk about my progress?
My first project: "The Journey" was to take a load of pictures of my trip up to college with a camera phone (in my case it was 2.0mp). After that we were supposed to edit down to 24 photos, edit it them to make them look interesting and create a ';photostory' (Photostory is property of Microsoft, you can get it free on Microsoft's website, it's a nifty piece of software, easier than WMM though not as good but does the job).
Naturally I did a test 'story of pictures around the college. It went alright I suppose. Used Highway Blues on Windows sample music ;D.
Anyway, my final piece was naturally made of 24 images of my drive up, using track... 17 of The Truman Show OST: Raising The Sail - which in my opinion, though a beautiful track, was too depressing, giving the video a melancholic feel. I'd change it and let them re-mark, but i'm indifferent right now. Also, my photoshop skills suck so much ass also, it was even harder because it was so pixelated when blown up to a more adequate size.
I got a B for it thankfully, haha! My overall project of the first got an A, an A* if I put more secondary research into it (magazine clippings and analysis etc).

We're now starting - or have already started - Black and White film. This project's title is "Alton and it's Community". Naturally, Alton is such a boring place. I tire of old people, and boring shops. It's just... bah. A boring community, but nevertheless playing with film and film camera's are truly exciting! I've been using my mother's cameras for this so far. Both are Minolta's (I'll put the pictures up of all my devices used in scraps at some point), the one with the long, zoom lens is an automatic, though the other camera - the much older one - is a manual with no zoom capabilities, only a focus and aperture dials on the lens. Naturally on both there is a shutter speed function. The Automatic can go up to I believe 1/4000 of a second to 30 seconds and the Manual can go up to 1/500 to 1 second and naturally both have the 'bulb' setting which has proved useful with the Manual.

Today we went back into Alton after we've seen the progress of our contact sheets we made after developing our previous Alton expedition film. Mine turned out alright, I now see how much light is needed for full developing.. so interesting. <3 Once I print out a set of pictures on the 15x10 photographic paper, I'll scan them and put them onto here.... the good ones I mean, haha.
Though I'm worried - I might have to retake the pictures of today as the film speed setting on the Manual wasn't at 400... so the callibration is all wrong and I've basically screwed it up... only found this out when I got home and asked my mother about the camera... It's from her old days when she did her Photography course.

So.. yeah. That's all I want to say about that.

On a more personal note, I'm concussed. So, many apologies if I'm kind of out of it. It hurts, and I still see and feel things I shouldn't but i'm alright to drive which is alright.
How did this happen? I know you didn't ask that, reader of mine, but I'm going to type anyway. I had a three hour karate session on friday and got headbutted... so if that wasn't bad enough, the saturday I went out a little bit and I got pushed into a wall, bashed my head and fell over, hitting it again... I suppose it was the latter experience that did me in, but the bruise upon my brow from the previous incident probably wasn't a huge help. I'm missinng part of my eyebrow because of it ;_; and my brother so kindly attacked me with a razor with the excuse of "i just wanted to even it up!"... dick.

My other subjects are going well in college, life at home is fine, and that's all I have to say about that. =]

Oh, and go watch Once. It's a modern musical and it's beautiful. GO!
And another thing, the subject title is from a song from Once, haha.

That's all. Because I'm not doing digital things, I won't be putting stuff up for a while unless I feel like it.

Ciao babe.

i was just wondering, cos i really like your photography (is that your cats? they're gorgeous :D) if you would give me a few pointers since i am new to photography and would like to improve ^^;
~thanks

Hallo!

Apart from the white and black tabby, they're my cats yes. I have four ^^;

Tips wise, it depends on what you're looking into really, and one has to remember that photography is subjective.
If you're going into animal photography holy crap use a fast shutter speed. They can't sit still for a second! I prefer landscape pictures personally, but this project i'm doing doesn't call for landscapes.

And thank you, it's not often i get such messages ^^;

D.
:iconalicen1ndrland:
lulz
wow what kind of cats are they? so pretty :3 *steals* lol jk i'm not an animal theif...usually o.o

oh ok lol well i do enjoy photographing my puppy <33 but she never stands still..unless she's begging, and the begging face never changes i_i so it can only be photographed to some extent xD yeah, maybe fast shutter speed will help. do you usually put a lot of lighting on them or just adjust the aperture to make up for it? o_O or am i mixing things up? it's aperture right? is it? oh jeez let me go look it up D:

oh it's no problem, i really do like your stuff a lot. :D
:iconroy-tron5000:
XD
They're just ginger tabby cats, all related in some way. Like, Oscar's an uncle of Buzz, and Buzz is the uncle of Violet and Jack.

You're quite right. I personally open the aperture up, and then put it on a faster shutter speed. I dislike flash on any camera, so when i get the money I'll buy a nice full flash. But sometimes it's alright.
When i began learning this stuff I always thought of a camera as an eye in a sense. The aperture was the pupil, and our eyelids are the shutters XD I did biology the previous year so i was still in that mindset ^^;
But anyway, I much prefer natural light to anything else.
Because of animals as jumpy as they are, if you can, stick to automatic focusing, and burst shots. Manual works better when you have the time to adjust.

What kind of camera do you have btw?

Catch him when he's sleeping, sleepy puppies are often super cute ;]
:iconalicen1ndrland:
aww, i luff tabbies!! *squish squish*
wow how old is oscar? o.O he's like a great-uncle, cool you have like three generations of ginger tabbies!! lol why am i getting all excited xD

oh ok yeah thanks lighting is so confuzzling :S
that is a really cool way of looking at it, like the lens is an eye...it makes sense, lol
oh um camera...well all the pix i have right now were shot using either my old kodak easy share digital camera or my mom's really old canon rebel (it's like x-something i forget and i have no idea what she's done with it) i've taken some shots with my dad's canon eos XTi (it's a digital) but they are on our main computer, which is...slow as all getout i_i i am trying to get them on my flash drive tonight but i don't know if i'm patient enough xD
what kind of camera do you have?
oh lol yeah she's a pug and she really is adorable sleeping <3 muahahahahaha >:-D
